9 Years Of Island Living

"When everything I once owned was gone, I felt extremely light"

- That’s me, 9 years ago.

Tomorrow, 15th of August, marks the day I moved from Finland to Fuerteventura. To celebrate that day with YOU, and because I’ve been reflecting that move recently - I felt guided to share a story Finnish newspaper wrote about it (written originally in Finnish, I translated it to English) - Trusting it will inspire, especially if you are going through some form of life changes as well.

At the end I’m also sharing my TOP TIPS for those who desire to change - Namaste - Talk to you soon again about upcoming events here in Fuerte & online!

Much love,

Salla

ILTASANOMAT - written by Maarit Rasi (13.2.2016)

“Salla made a life change - "When everything I once owned was gone, I felt extremely light" Salla, age 35, moved to the Canary Islands to found a yoga school. The change in life started with a 900 kilometer walk.

While walking the famous pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela in 2010, Salla's life change started step by step.

- I started to slow down, so to speak, so that I can see more closely around me and notice what I need and want from my life and myself, she says. The thought of something new started to pop in the woman's mind.

Before this, Salla worked as a dance teacher, choreographer and restaurant manager in a seasonal restaurant. As a freelancer, she had alternately worked a  lot, and alternately traveled and taken time off.

The final decision to change her life happened when she studied to become a yoga instructor in an international program.

- There I had to write down my wishes as goals so that I could realize them. I woke up that it was time for me to stop working as a freelancer and do something of my own. That decision released a lot of energy that I needed to make the change happen.

The wishes became concrete when she traveled to the Canary Islands in June 2015 to look for a place for her own yoga studio.

- In a week I found a place and returned to Finland. The end of the summer was one of moving chaos. I sold, donated and gave away almost everything I owned.

- When everything I once owned was gone, I felt extremely light.

Today, Salla lives in the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura, in the village of Corralejo. I teach yoga six days a week. The job also includes office tasks and training for those studying to become yoga instructors four times a year. The woman does not miss Finland.

- Fuerteventura felt like home from the beginning. Almost 365 days of sun, the surrounding sea and the lively but relaxed village of Corralejo welcome me again and again. I grew my new roots here.

She still uses the same guideline that led her to the path of change.

- I rule out the possibility that something that truly calls to me wouldn’t be within my reach. I commit to listening to even the smallest signs and feelings of guidance and calm certainty. I trust my intuition.

- Now I have found roots for this day that feel solid. Just as roots should - so that something can blossom.

Salla's list of tips for those who want a change in life:

1. Write about it (lists, notes and cheer phrases) so the change you desire becomes super clear and familiar for yourself.

2. Be the change and changer for yourself.

3. If possible, save a little money for the time of change.

4. When you know what you are going to do, find out how it will be done - because it can be done!

5. Be kind, open and patient in everything you encounter.

6. Keep in mind what is important to you and your own well-being.

7. Give the change time to settle in.

8. Remember that the only constant thing in life is change.”
